Deep-sea skin care ingredients seem to be getting more attention these days, and rightly so. The sea is home to an abundance of naturally occurring powerful, nutrient-rich ingredients that work to heal, protect and correct the skin.
Seawater has long been used – for thousands of years in fact – for its therapeutic and revitalizing properties. Seaweed, micro algae and deep-sea microorganisms are highly concentrated with vitamins, minerals, proteins, antioxidants, and amino acids that restore, repair, hydrate, detoxify and defend against damaging environmental elements. As beach weather approaches, it’s the perfect time to get clients excited about deep-sea rejuvenating ingredients.
The Gems of the Ocean
As I mentioned, there are a number of deep-sea species that deliver benefits to the skin. Some oceanic ingredients are more surface level while others come from various bacterial genera living near deep-sea hydrothermal vents. These contain extraordinary molecules that promote youthful skin. At a glance, the ocean’s power players include:
- Seaweed – there are several different types of seaweed – brown, red, blue/green, and micro/macro algae. Each produces different benefits, but in a nutshell, they nourish, infuse the skin with a powerful dose of antioxidants and vitamins, and protect the skin.
- Thermus Thermophilus Ferment Extract – is a powerful antioxidant and detoxifying enzyme activated by heat and light. It improves epidermal structural integrity and functionality, limits free-radical damage and supports the skin with biomimetic enzymes.
- Alteromonas Ferment Extract and Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract – improve skin texture, stabilize lipid membranes and proteins, and rebuild and repair skin tissues. These ingredients have been shown to improve skin appearance and fight the signs of aging caused by daily stresses – both environmental aggressors and internal processes.
Diving In
Luckily you don’t have to go deep-sea diving to excavate your own microorganisms; there are a number of skin care formulas we can turn to for the oceanic benefits. Of course not all formulas are created equal. Before you dive into a product, you may want to investigate the origin of the sea ingredients used, whether the brand is reputable, and the ingredient list. Is the formula concentrated with this ingredient or does it only contain a miniscule amount?
When a formula uses the right base, highest-quality ingredients and correct levels, the oceanic ingredients will effectively reduce wrinkle formation, protect against DNA damage, and deliver oxygen to and strengthen skin tissue.
We use thermus thermophilus ferment extract, alteromonas ferment extract and pseudoalteromonas ferment extractin our Sea Gems, Brightening Pigment Lotion, and Naturale Mega Brightening Serum.
As summer approaches, consider talking to clients about the power of ocean ingredients and create some fun marketing promotions around it.
Question: How do you educate or talk to your clients about the benefits of deep-sea microorganisms?
