This summer you may find yourself enjoying some time near the ocean. There certainly are many reasons to appreciate it – the breathtaking views, tranquil effects, and the wildlife. Another, lesser known reason to appreciate the ocean is the powerful microorganisms found deep under the water’s surface.
Many of these microorganisms are extremely beneficial for the skin, and work to rejuvenate and fight the signs of aging. For example, Thermus Thermophilus Ferment Extract, found in deep-sea hydrothermal vents, immerses the skin in rich amino acids, peptides and enzymes.
What is it?
Thermus Thermophilus Ferment Extract is a specialized bacterium strain originally isolated to thermal vent environments, but it has since been found in shallow marine hydrothermal systems, as well as low-saline solfataric springs. It thrives, however in temperatures of approximately 150 degrees.
Not all strains are created equal though. The diversity in habitat also creates diversity in nutritional values. We have found the best strains to be from the deep-sea Gulf of California. This strain is a powerful antioxidant, activated by heat and light. Many of its benefits are most comparable to vitamin E, and it also contains proteins, including enzymes, that are particularly effective at soaking up free radicals produced by UV exposure.
How does it work?
In testing this strain, we found that six months of use prevented five years of aging. The Thermus Thermophilus Ferment Extract worked to protect against age spots, wrinkles and blemishes, by protecting fibroblasts against the pro-oxidizing attack of free radicals. The benefits of this dynamic and impressive ingredient are almost countless. It also works to:
- Stimulate keratinocyte differentiation and maturation
- Strengthen stratum corneum resistance against aggression – protecting against UV damage
- Restore the cutaneous barrier quality
- Reduce water loss after an induced lesion
- Increase ceramide production
- Inspire healthy oxygenation
Where to find it?
Don’t worry, you don’t have to go deep-sea diving to excavate your own supply of this powerful microorganism, we have already done the leg work. Since 2007 we began using it in several of our formulas, including the Sea Gems, Brightening Pigment Lotion , and Naturale Mega Brightening Serum.
