Ingredient Spotlight: Glycine Soja

Who would have thought a tiny bean could hold so much nutrition? By now you likely know soybeans are an excellent source of protein. You may have also heard about the health benefits they deliver to the body when consumed in moderation. But do you know how they impact the skin?

Soybean or Glycine Soja Protein is commonly used for cosmetic purposes for its protection and prevention abilities. It has a high-moisturization factor and, since it is a protein, it assists in the fight against aging. It is a botanical active based on albumin and globulin, derived from the soybean plant.

What It Is

The soybean is a species of legume native to eastern Asia. Today, however, soybeans are a global crop. Since they are considered a complete protein – and for many years during tough times were used as a primary source of protein – soybeans are now cultivated in many countries around the world.

For skin care purposes however, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Protein is derived from soybean amino acids. It is rich in proteins, minerals and vitamins, which nourish and fortify skin tissues, and it is commonly used to re-condition the skin, improve suppleness and prevent over drying. It also strengthens and refines fine lines when used in all-over leave-in therapies.

How It Works

Since Glycine Soja Protein is an antioxidant and MMPI (Matrix Metallpoprotease Inhibitor) it helps defend against skin aging by inhibiting skin matrix breakdown. It also supports the function of fibroblasts, and reduces inflammation and irritations caused by UV exposure and other environmental stresses, which cause the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the dermal matrix via collagenase and elastase (MMPs).

Glycine Soja is also noted for its anti-wrinkle, smoothing, tensor and moisturizing properties. It is an extremely effective moisturizer, protecting the skin from excessive dryness, which is common during the winter months.
