Ingredient Intelligence: Albizia Julibrissin / Persian Silk Tree

A beautiful name with an equally beautiful benefit, the Persian silk tree (INCI: albizia julibrissin) or Mimosa as it’s sometimes referred, helps blossom beautiful, healthy, strengthened skin.

Mother Nature is an amazing source for “intelligent ingredients” aimed to help us guide clients down the road to the fountain of youth. Albizia julibrissin is one such ingredient delivered to us through nature that has proven effective in the battle against glycation and cell aging. What is this ingredient, and how does it work? Read on for more.

What It Is

Albizia julibrissin is a species of tree native to southwestern and eastern Asia (Iran to Japan), though it has spread throughout the U.S. and other countries. It is noted for its dark leaves, fern-like appearance, and fluffy, pink powder-puff flowers.

In aesthetics, albizia julibrissin is known for its ability to protect the skin cells by producing melatonin and reducing the cause of skin fatigue and weakened collagen fibers – i.e. glycation. In the process of glycation sugar molecules attach to and degrade protein and fat fibers, making them weak and malformed, reducing a cell’s ability to produce enough energy to respond to mechanical stressors. The result is cellular fatigue and aging.

How It Works

Albizia julibrissin works by improving respiration, ridding the skin of toxic glycogens, increasing cellular energy and reducing the formation of the Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs) pigments, a known source of wrinkles, and dull, sagging skin.

Acting as a barrier, albizia julibrissin protects collagen and elastin, reducing the signs of skin fatigue caused by glycation – namely under eye bags, dark circles, drawn facial features, and a dull complex. It helps to leave the skin looking refreshed and youthful.

We are currently working with this ingredient in our soon-to-be released Age less Anti-Glycation Serum-Enhanced, in combination with a few other ingredients known to correct and prevent glycation. These include:

  • Chrysin complex – reinforces firmness and facilitates the reduction of blood pigments responsible for dark circles.
  • Plantago lanceolata (plantain) leaf extract - the plant’s stem cells are used to rebuild, brighten, improve elastin synthesis and smooth the skin.
  • Black tea ferment complex – enhances radiance and clarity while promoting firmness and a youthful complexion.

This amazing anti-glycation ingredient will start your clients journey to achieving optimal skin health and repairing any damage previously done by glycation. This is a great tool to add to your anti-AGEs arsenal.
