How to Get Your Male Clientele Ready for Movember

How to Get Your Male Clientele Ready for Movember

You’ve likely heard of the growing movement called Movember that takes place every year. More than one million men (Mo Bros), and now women (Mo Sistas), participate in this global movement, which started in 2003. It encourages men to grow, and women to support, a moustache for 30 days in November as a way to raise awareness for men’s health. Chances are many of your clientele, both men and women, are participating.

November 1 marks the official “Shave the Date” in which all men get clean-shaven in preparation for the 30 days of Movember. Why not help them prepare for the universal shave date and support them throughout the month with regular grooming and maintenance treatments?

How to Support Movember

There are a number of ways you can support men, and the women who support them, throughout their moustache-growing process. You can do so by providing them shaving and grooming tips, as well as regular maintenance treatments, or hosting fundraiser events and fun online campaigns.

Movember Events: You might consider hosting an event on “Shave the Date” to get men started on the right foot. This event might include:

  • Free or discounted treatments such as a clean shave and mini facial
  • Provide a best shaving practices tip sheet
  • Sell shaving kits and donate a portion of the proceeds to Movember
  • Kickoff a “Best Moustache” contest by snapping photos of men with their clean-shaven faces. You might post these somewhere in your spa or on your Facebook page. Throughout the month post updated photos and at the end of the month post the results. You can have people vote on the best moustache. (See below for more on this idea).

Support the Moustache: Of course growing a moustache and maintaining it may not always be as easy as simply foregoing shaving. This will be especially true for men not used to moustaches and those who have worn a beard for sometime and now have to start shaving regularly. Help them get through Movember and grow a great moustache with these best practices:

  • Prevent razor burn and bumping by softening the beard with a warm cloth or steam from a warm shower prior to your shave.
  • Use a Shave Oil and Shave Gel to keep the skin hydrated and prevent the razor from “tugging” at beard hairs.
  • Shave with the grain to help prevent ingrown hairs and skin irritation.
  • Keep clean by working cleanser into the moustache during daily facial cleansing. Rinse thoroughly.
  • Groom with a pair of barber scissors, a fine-toothed comb and a double-edge razor. Have the shape in mind you are going for and start by trimming the strays and longer hairs on the outer edge and bottom of your moustache. Clippers can also help maintain a consistent length.
